South Pigalle “SoPi”
Paris is a very large city that depending on your style and budget has defined areas to go to. If you are into the glamorous life then the 8th, 16th, and 1st district is the best area to show off some glitz and do some fine dining at celebrity hotspots. If you are more mellow and like something more relaxed and discreet the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th are the best districts to be in. While this is not an exact science as some places in the 16th can be just as relaxed as places in the 5th or vice-versa the overall feeling of the city is very marked this way. Now, there is a new area of Paris to be in, its up and coming for the last years now full of chic bars and restaurants that seem to be opening everywhere from left to right. Located in Pigalle where lots of raunchy and not so appropiate places, to say the least, comes to mind. South Pigalle has recovered a lot of these places and brought a new energy that is full of local designers, local cafes, restaurants, and bars that give this area a whole new meaning to the word trendy.
While SoPi is not full of historical monuments to check out, there were some monumentally important historical figures that roamed these streets. People like George Sands and Fredrick Chopin, amongst other important figures were known to this area. To share that piece of history the Musee de la Vie Romantique was opened to show that era. Within walking distance of this museum the many restaurants of SoPi appear, the heart line of SoPi is rue des martyrs a long street that has all the cafes, bars, and restaurants that makes this place so trendy and worth going. Near this street there is a coffe shop that has, in my opinion, one of the best Sunday brunches out there. Its called KB CafeShop (53 avenue trudaine 75009) and it's the epitome of what this area has become. The coffee aficionados can very well find here an excellent flat white. On rue des martyrs there are so many great options that just walking down this street and it's surrounding you will find whatever your in the mood for. For having a drink or having some snacks with your drinks, Maria Magdalena is a great option (41 Rue de la Rochefoucauld 75009), a definite must to try is their Melanzane, you won’t regret it! There are so many other places like Glass or Le Carmen for a more active night out, but really so many great options that are worth going to by just exploring the streets in this area.
